About Lower Hutt Civic and Riddiford Gardens

Established in 1923 as Lower Hutt’s first public park, housing a notable collection of trees and ornamental planting, the Gardens have long provided a civic setting for community facilities. They were a place of great pride to the city; residents showcased the latest horticultural fashions in the Horticultural Hall, swam in the outdoor baths and picnic-ed in the gardens. In the 1950s, as the city of Lower Hutt expanded, the modernist Civic precinct of library, halls, war memorial and council buildings was established.
